Sound Rivers Volunteer Coordinator Emily Fritz and Water Quality Specialist Taylor Register joined in the fun at a cleanup turned afterparty in honor of National Marina Day last Saturday.

For a third year, Sound Rivers has partnered with Northwest Creek Marina to co-host a cleanup of the marina.

“They’ve always been lovely and supportive and appreciate of the work we do, especially the Swim Guide samples that we take,” Emily said.

Due to an iffy forecast, it was a smaller gathering this year in comparison to past years, but that didn’t stop the cleanup, nor the fun.

“There were people on the banks, on the docks, some people out in the water in dinghies, picking up trash,” Emily said. “It was definitely a smaller cleanup, but we were still able to remove about 30 pounds of trash.”

Following the cleanup, there was music, food trucks and a Brütopia beverage spot to celebrate everyone’s hard work. Raffle tickets for a sailing charter on the Neuse were also being sold.

“A big shout out to Wind Song Sailing Adventures — all proceeds from the raffle go to Sound Rivers. The drawing is not until next week, so you can still buy a ticket at the Northwest Creek Marina clubhouse,” Emily said.
