Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper Katey Zimmerman, Water Quality Specialist Taylor Seijo and Volunteer Coordinator Emily Fritz went witchy for water at Estu-SCARY-um, the North Carolina Estuarium’s annual Halloween event.

Dressed as the Sanderson sisters from the classic Halloween movie “Hocus Pocus,” starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy, the Sound Rivers trio “scared” exhibit visitors with dirty water under the blacklight.

“We set up a really straightforward demonstration on our table showing how ‘dirty water,’ or water with high levels of bacteria, will glow under a blacklight after we add reagents to the water in our lab,” Taylor said. “The blacklight was a hit for the kids, and for the parents too!”

Dirty water glows eerily under the blacklight.

The annual event at the Estuarium was a first for Sound Rivers, and the invitation to participate came from the Water Watch program.

“We actually learned about the event while we were training one our Water Watch volunteers, Katie McCullough, who just so happens to be the Executive Curator over at the Estuarium,” Taylor said. “After she pitched it to us and invited us to dress up and be a part of it, we couldn’t resist! We did have to ditch our Sanderson sister wigs because they were just too hot and itchy.”

Children are “spooked” by the “dirty” water under the blacklight.
