Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper Katey Zimmerman and Program Assistant Sierra Stickney Digan at the recent Pride Paddle on the Tar River.

Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper Katey Zimmerman and Program Assistant Sierra Stickney Digan donned some colorful gear, their PFDs and took to the Tar River last Sunday for Greenville’s Pride Paddle, celebrating the LGBTQIA+ river-loving community.

“It was great fun,” Katey said. “It was a hot one, but there was a really good turnout.”

The group of 15 launched kayaks and paddleboards and kayaks from Port Terminal, then paddled against the current to Wildwood Park and back — a distance of just under three miles.

“There was quite a current and the river was just below flood stage,” Katey said. “It was definitely a much easier paddle on the way back!”

A festive group took to the water for the paddle from Port Terminal to Wildwood Park and back.

River outfitters Knee Deep Adventures hosted the event; Sound Rivers staff was there to show their support.

“We’re definitely glad to support it and continue strengthening our partnership with Kate at Knee Deep Adventures,” Katey said. “This is one of many ways we can make more connections with people in Greenville who love getting out on the water and can share how important the Tar River is with them.”
