Neuse Riverkeeper Samantha Krop met up with members of the Wake Audubon Society at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences this week.
“This is a very environmentally aware and active group that has a pretty involved member base,” Samantha said. “I’ve worked with one of their organizers, on some of their issues — development issues in Raleigh — such as the development being built across the Neuse River from Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve.”

Despite a cold, rainy evening, more than 40 people attended Samantha’s presentation, while several dozen others tuned in virtually. In addition to screening Sound Rivers’ 40th-anniversary documentary, “A Sound River,” she talked about the issues she’s currently working on: loss of wetlands, flooding from climate change, land-use changes and the impacts of development.
“They had lots of good questions and were very interested in our work,” Samantha said.
Members of the group signed on to help Sound Rivers Volunteer Coordinator Emily Fritz with the Little Rock Creek trash trap cleanout scheduled for Feb. 22 in Raleigh, and the group has pledged to adopt the same trash trap in May.
Samantha said the event was a great opportunity to share Sound Rivers’ mission with a group of like-minded people.
“They recognize that the same land-use practices that affect water quality also affect birds and wildlife,” she said.
