Description

Tar River, Bunn vicinity — The John Vollmer Memorial Platform, is situated at the edge of Vollmer farms, tucked in along the Tar River near Bunn in Franklin County. The platform is located about 17 miles downstream of Riverbend Park in Louisburg. Here, the river begins to show signs of transition toward the coastal plain, where you can start to see cypress trees along the river bank.  You will likely encounter many signs of wildlife, including fox, white-tailed deer, beaver and numerous varieties of waterfowl and songbirds.

Special thanks to Mr. Russ Vollmer, who dedicated this camping site in memory of his father, John Vollmer, and to Novozymes, Inc. for the donation of building funds. Vollmer Farm

*Paddler Safety Note: The takeout at the campsite can be difficult in low water. Please note that in this area of the river, water levels and flows can increase dramatically in a few hours if there is heavy rainfall. Also, about 16.5 miles downstream of the platform, you’ll encounter Webb Mill dam. The portage takeout is located a few hundred yards upstream of the dam on the righthand side. The dam is 8-10 feet, and great caution is warranted in this area. Stay back from the dam because water flows over it.
