(Left to right) Volunteer Coordinator Emily Fritz, Water Quality Specialist Taylor Register and Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper Katey Zimmerman prepare to launch on a practice paddle.

Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper Katey Zimmerman, Water Quality Specialist Taylor Register and Volunteer Coordinator Emily Fritz took to the Tar this week to practice for an adventure of a lifetime.

The three Sound Rivers staffers will embark on an 11-day kayak trip on the Tar River, from Oxford to Washington, in October. But before they committed to carrying all their supplies as they paddle nearly 175 miles of the Tar-Pamlico water trail, camping along the way, they opted for a three-day trial run closer to home.

Sound Rivers staffers paddle from the launch site on the Tar River in Falkland.

Program Director Clay Barber — who did his own “Tour de Tar” along with then-Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper Jill Howell in 2020 — accompanied the trio to their launch site in Falkland earlier this week.

According to Katey, the quick trip will give them a better idea of what they should be prepared for, supplies they need, and staying overnight at Sound Rivers’ camping platforms.

We’ll have more on this next week, so check back in! If you’re interested in supporting Katey, Emily and Taylor’s paddle in October, we’ll have opportunities coming up!
