A fire extinguisher was a very strange find in this week's trash trap cleanout.
Sound Rivers Volunteer Coordinator Emily Fritz took a break from Swim Guide coordination to meet up with a volunteer for a Kinston trash trap cleanout.
Emily and high school student Mason Mastellar took on the Adkin Branch trash trap, removing more than 15 pounds of trash that had been swept downstream by recent rains and captured by the trap. Included among their trash trap finds were lots of Styrofoam and a fire extinguisher.

“I guess I know how things like fire extinguishers end up in our waterways, but I really don’t understand the why people choose to use creeks and streams as dumping grounds,” Emily said.
Mason, who Emily calls a “superstar volunteer,” is a rising senior at Havelock’s Early College High School and is participating in both Sound Rivers’ Litter-Free Rivers trash trap cleanouts and Swim Guide sampling this summer.

Thanks, Mason, for your efforts to keep the Neuse clean!
