Welcome 2025!

Posted on January 2nd, 2025

In this first week of 2025, Sound Rivers’ staff is in planning mode, mapping out how we’re going to advocate, educate and create new opportunities to work for your waterways — and clean water! — in the new year!
We thought we’d catch up with our Riverkeeping team and program staff and ask them to share what they’re looking forward to in the coming year. Scroll down to find out!

Neuse Riverkeeper Samantha Krop

I’m looking forward to digging into our place-based work, protecting important waterways in partnership with those who rely on them.

I’m also looking forward to getting into creeks with community–more creek walks, wetland tours and field opportunities to connect the public with the places we work to protect.

Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper Katey Zimmerman

I am so grateful to be entering into another year with Sound Rivers! In 2025, I am looking forward to working with the team to launch the new Water Watch program in the Spring and planning for my Tar River paddle in the Fall.

Program Director Clay Barber

I’m looking forward to growing and fine-tuning our Litter-Free Rivers, Campus Stormwater and Swim Guide programs even further. They have really become incredible tools for monitoring, protecting and restoring our waterways, as well as amazing opportunities for educating, connecting and uniting people.

Water Quality Specialist Taylor Register

I’m most looking forward to all of our upcoming work with Slocum Creek! We have lots on the horizon, from continuing our investigation up in Wolf Pit to potential grant opportunities that will allow us to identify and address pollution issues in other parts of the creek. We’ve done so much out in Slocum Creek already, so I’m always looking forward to continuing that work and moving towards getting the creek in a healthier state for our community.

Volunteer Coordinator Emily Fritz

I’m looking forward to getting more people out on the water and cleaning up our rivers! We have a ton of cleanups and volunteer opportunities planned for this year and I can’t wait to see you all out there!

Stormwater Education Coordinator Sierra Stickney

I look forward to implementing more stormwater education days at local schools and assisting with stormwater control measure projects on campuses around the watersheds.

It’s an exciting year to come: more projects, more events, more volunteer opportunities await in 2025!
