Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper Katey Zimmerman welcomes the Washington crowd to the Water Watch training.
Sound Rivers’ Riverkeeping team is back in Water Watch action this week, hosting trainings in Washington and New Bern.
Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper Katey Zimmerman led off the Washington event on Wednesday, held in the theater of the North Carolina Estuarium. A crowd of two dozen potential Water Watchers turned out for the event, the second series of trainings the team has held this year. Joining Katey were Neuse Riverkeeper Samantha Krop, Water Quality Specialist Taylor Register and Volunteer Coordinator Emily Fritz.

Water Watch’s inaugural trainings were held in April in Oriental and Blounts Creek; a fourth training was held in New Bern on Thursday night.
Sound Rivers’ Riverkeepers have a lot of watershed to pay attention to, and since they can’t be everywhere at once, they rely heavily on community members to let them know when things are wrong on the water. That’s how Water Watch evolved: Water Watchers are trained in the field to collect scientific observations about water quality, flooding, erosion, habitat and more. With the help of Water Watch volunteers, your Riverkeepers can monitor and protect more stream miles in the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico watersheds, and help grow a volunteer base of community members who are trained and knowledgeable about water-quality science.
