Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper Katey Zimmerman took to the water last week on Tar-Pamlico Water Trail recon adventure.
Katey met up with longtime Sound Rivers’ supporter and volunteer Bob Hudkins to assess the state of two of Sound Rivers’ camping platforms on the Water Trail. Both camping sites — the Panola Farm and the River Farm camping platforms — are located in the Tarboro area and required visiting via canoe.

What they found was some general repair is needed at both locations.
“Most of the issues are with the screens that are around them. Luckily, mostly the screen has just come loose and needs to be tightened, but there are some areas that do need replacement,” she said.
The toll taken by storms through the years was apparent at the Panola Farm platform, however.
“The banks are pretty steep, and previously there were two sets of staircases going up to that platform,” Katey said. “Now, one set has disappeared. I’m sure it was from one of the big flooding events since they were installed. We’ve had a couple big storms and floods, since then.”

Katey is assembling a group of volunteers for repairs at Sound Rivers’ 13 camping platforms along the Tar-Pamlico Water Trail. Sign up to help get one, a few or all of them in tip-top shape before prime water-trail season by emailing Katey at katey@soundrivers.org!
