Sound Rivers Volunteer Coordinator (and birthday girl!) Emily Fritz, volunteer Dr. Yoshi Newman and Stormwater Education Coordinator Sierra Stickney cleaned out the Greens Mill Run trash trap on Thursday.

Just in time for the holidays, Sound Rivers staff and volunteers made a round of trash trap cleanouts in Raleigh, Greenville and Washington.

On Monday in Raleigh, 38.1 pounds of trash was removed from the Marsh Creek trash traps at Stonybrook and Greywood drives, courtesy of Sound Rivers’ partners The Great Raleigh Cleanup.

Volunteers with the Great Raleigh Cleanup cleaned out two trash traps on Marsh Creek on Monday.

Also on Monday, the “Trashy Friends” paid a visit to Washington trash trap No. 1 on Jack’s Creek and walked away with 20 pounds of garbage.

In Greenville, Volunteer Coordinator (and birthday girl!) Emily Fritz, Stormwater Education Coordinator Sierra Stickney, Program Director Clay Barber and volunteer Dr. Yoshi Newman emptied the Greens Mill Run trash trap of 45.08 pounds of litter on Thursday.

Volunteer Coordinator Emily Fritz celebrated her birthday with the Greens Mill Run trash trap.

In four days, more than 100 pounds of trash was removed from tributaries of the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico rivers. Thank you, volunteers and staff, for sprucing up these waterways for the holidays!

In 2023, Sound Rivers started its Litter-Free Rivers program and has since installed 10 trash traps, or passive litter-collection devices, on urban tributaries in Washington, New Bern, Raleigh, Tarboro, Greenville and Kinston. Nearly three tons of trash have been removed from these waterways in 2024, alone!
