Jonah Dickerson, Volunteer Coordinator Emily Fritz and Avalon Rosenberger celebrate 55 pounds of trash removed from the Kinston trash trap.
Sound Rivers’ 2025 “Swim-terns” leapt into action on their first week of their summer internships.
Since Memorial Day was a little early this year, Avalon Rosenberger and Jonah Dickerson had three days of intense training before the first Swim Guide samples of the season rolled in on Thursday. The two got a crash course in processing those samples, reading results, then sharing them out to the public.
In addition to Swim Guide duties, Avalon and Jonah were also introduced to Sound Rivers LItter-Free Rivers program and its fleet of trash traps.

Avalon comes to Sound Rivers from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and the Pavel Molchanov Scholars Program. She’s a rising senior who is doubling majoring in English and Comparative Literature and Environmental Science; minoring in Marine Science.
Jonah Dickerson is a rising sophomore at East Carolina University and the State Employees Credit Union Public Fellows Internship Program. Jonah is majoring in Geographic Information Sciences and Technology and is excited to be helping Sound Rivers with some of his expertise this summer.
If you’d like to send Avalon and Jonah a “Welcome aboard!” note, shoot them an email: avalon@soundrivers.org and jonah@soundrivers.org!
