Want to spend the summer outdoors and exploring North Carolina’s waterways? Apply to Sound Rivers!
The main focus of the internship is our water-quality testing program, Swim Guide, which provides important data to folks throughout the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico watersheds so they can make informed decisions while recreating on the water throughout the summer. The data collected also provides important insight into the health of our waterways and allows us to investigate water-quality issues throughout eastern North Carolina. In this role, you will be responsible for communicating with our amazing Sound Rivers volunteers, collecting and processing water samples, and assisting with sharing that data with the public.
In addition to our Swim Guide program, interns are encouraged and supported to explore all aspects of our organization. Interested in advocacy? Data analysis? Building stormwater infrastructure, like rain gardens? Fieldwork? Pollution investigations? Community organizing? Social media? This internship is for you! There are a multitude of paths in the environmental space, and we want to provide experience and a chance to explore it all!
Z. Smith Reynolds internship Criteria:
- You must be a North Carolina native/resident at an accredited four-year college or university in the United States (the college/university can be in or outside of NC);
- You are a rising sophomore, junior or senior (Note that current seniors set to graduate in the spring or summer are NOT eligible, nor are graduate students);
- You are Pell grant-eligible in the academic year in which you apply for the Nonprofit Internship Program.
Applications are due by Friday, Jan. 30, 2026, at 11:59 p.m.
