Stormwater Education Coordinator Sierra Stickney Digan introduces teachers to Sound Rivers' Campus Stormwater Program.
Sound Rivers staff gave educators an education in water quality at the Craven Summit this week.
Volunteer Coordinator Emily Fritz and Stormwater Education Coordinator Sierra Stickney (Resilience Corps NC AmeriCorps member) were invited to share Sound Rivers’ work with teachers from across Craven County in the one-day summit hosted at New Bern High School.

“It was a successful event! Emily presented on all things Sound Rivers with her presentation titled ‘Current Flow: A Deep Dive Into the Neuse River,’ and I discussed our Campus Stormwater Program and educational opportunities with ‘Campus Stormwater: Weathering Storms, and Learning From It,’” Sierra said.
The two spoke to more than 60 educators, and a few administrators in attendance, throughout the day.
“We had teachers from elementary to high school: science teachers, PE teachers, English teachers,” Emily said. “It was great because water quality and environmental education goes beyond science classes — it affects everyone, so I’m really excited to get other classes involved. A lot of people were really excited and asking a ton of great questions about the details of the Swim Guide program, what the process is for having rainwater harvesting cisterns installed.”

Sierra and Emily both said the educational outreach will definitely bring results.
“A number of teachers are eager to explore new educational resources for their classrooms,” Sierra said. “It was a valuable experience speaking with teachers from various schools and discussing the ways we can help create dynamic learning opportunities for their students.”
