Last week, Sound Rivers’ staff took a day to get out on the river and enjoy one another”s company AND the waterways we serve. We also used it as an opportunity to say goodbye to Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper Jill Howell and her First Mate Miller as they head up north and the role of executive director at a new environmental nonprofit created to protect the waters of Penobscot Bay and its tributaries in Mid-Coast Maine. Kayaking on Runyon Creek and the Pamlico River was followed by lunch at the picnic shelter at Havens Gardens in Washington.

For some of our staff, it was their first kayak outing, but they took to it like ducks to water!

The crew prepares for their kayak outing with the help of Inner Banks Outfitters’ Sheri Dean. The kayak launch on Runyon Creek was built two years ago through a partnership between Sound Rivers, the City of Washington and North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
