Neuse Riverkeeper Samantha Krop takes photos of CAFOs from above.
Neuse Riverkeeper Samantha Krop and Water Quality Specialist Taylor Register took to the skies this week to check out potential pollution problems from above.
“Part of our routine monitoring is of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) that have a history of issues or are in sensitive places, like the floodplain,” Samantha said. “There are a lot of CAFOs in the floodplain, and that poses an issue. Part of our work is to monitor them and be prepared before a disaster happens.”
Taylor and Sam took off from the New Bern airport today, courtesy of SouthWings and volunteer pilot Rolf Wallin, who gave them an aerial tour of six industrial hog facilities located in floodplains in Jones County and Craven County.
