Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper Katey Zimmerman presents to the Pitt County Wildlife Club in Greenville.
Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper Katey Zimmerman made a trip to Greenville last week to talk to the Pitt County Wildlife Club about issues facing the Tar River.
With 20 minutes allotted, Katey dove into the Big Three: wastewater discharge, industrial animal agriculture and rapid development of land — all of which can contribute to the river’s pollution.
“I always start off my presentations with the terrible things happening to the river, then end with talking about the work we do and how Sound Rivers is working to mitigate those terrible things,” Katey said.
Katey said the group had some questions that led to interesting discussions.
“There were some questions and concerns, generally, about sewer spills, and specifically sewage spills in Rocky Mount and why those ongoing issues aren’t rectified as quickly as we feel they should be,” she said.
Greenville is downstream of Rocky Mount on the Tar River.
Katey said speaking engagements like this are a great opportunity to share her work with people who may not have had much exposure to Sound Rivers.
