Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper Katey Zimmerman pilots the Crestliner down Tranter's Creek.

Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper Katey Zimmerman and water-quality intern Tierney Reardon took advantage of a rain-free Wednesday afternoon to head out on the river.

Their mission: to check the status of one of Sound Rivers’ 13 camping platforms on the Tar-Pamlico Water Trail.

The Cypress Hideaway platform on the Tar River.

“Tierney and I took the Crestliner out from Mason Landing on Tranter’s Creek, and went upstream on the Tar River to the Cypress Hideaway platform to assess what repairs are needed,” Katey said. “While there were a few tears in the screen, I’d say it’s in pretty good condition.”

Katey is assisting Sound Rivers Program Director Clay Barber with a work plan for the platforms, by putting eyes on each one.

“Over the next few months, I’m going to be taking a look at all of them and report back to Clay, who’s making a plan to organize volunteers and supplies and get all the platforms back in good condition,” she said.

Camping platforms are viewable here. To make a reservation, call 252-946-7211 or email admin@soundrivers.org.
