The Runyon Creek watershed, just east of Washington.
The Runyon Creek watershed will be in the spotlight on May 21, as residents are invited to attend an open house highlighting projects in the Runyon Creek 9-Element Watershed Plan.
The event, hosted by Sound Rivers and Mid-East Commission, will share potential plans and projects resulting from the three-year Runyon Creek study.
“We want to hear your thoughts about different projects we’re proposing, and we’re still accepting input from the community about problem areas in Runyon Creek watershed — if you know of one, come tell us about it,” said Sound Rivers Program Director Clay Barber. “We’ve got proposals for a couple of rain gardens, bioretention areas and constructed wetlands, including a rain garden up at the Beaufort County Health Department, which they seem to be on board with.”
Runyon Creek is a tributary of the Pamlico River; the Runyon Creek watershed drains agricultural and low-density residential areas on the east side of Washington.
In addition to watershed restoration projects, there will be a variety of community resources available, from information about county assistance for farmers to cost-sharing programs on septic repair.
It’s not too late to weigh in on the Runyon Creek watershed. Take the survey here!
The event will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on May 21 at the Washington Civic Center, 110 Gladden St., Washington. Refreshments will be available.
