Sound Rivers joined forces with Northwest Creek Marina last Saturday to spruce up the creek.

Sound Rivers’ interns Katrina Borgen, Eloise MacLean and Tierney Reardon, along with Volunteer Coordinator Emily Fritz, were all on hand to pass out trash bags, grabbers and gloves to the 30-plus people participating in a cleanup.

“A good amount of people had a personal reason for helping with the cleanup, because they keep their boats at the marina, and one of the participants actually lives at the marina,” Kat said.

The cleanup took place by land and by sea: some set out on foot, patrolling the docks and the parking lot, while others kayaked around the harbor to collect trash. Entire families turned out for the event, which was a combination cleanup and celebration of National Marina Day with plenty of activities that followed.

“It was really sweet to see a wholesome family event that centered around keeping the marina clean,” Kat said.

While plenty of trash was picked up, she said it was encouraging to see it was a relatively small amount.

“We got a few good bags of trash and some old broken crab pots,” Kat said. “Many people reported that they couldn’t find a ton of trash, which is good news because it means the marina, which is near our Swim Guide site, Blackbeard Sailing Club, is not super polluted!”
