Sound Rivers and the City of Havelock are teaming up to talk about water quality.

The public is invited to a “Water Quality & Recreation at Slocum Creek” listening session at 7 p.m. on Feb. 20 at the Havelock Tourist and Event Center in Havelock. City officials will be sharing plans for new recreational opportunities on Slocum Creek, as well as the work being done to address sewer line infrastructure issues and upgrades being made.

Sound Rivers’ Neuse Riverkeeper Samantha Krop and Water Quality Specialist Taylor Register will give a presentation about the health of the creek, and the pollution investigation that led to collaboration with the city.

“This is the first time we’ve presented collaborative work with the city to address this issue that has been going on for so long,” Sam said. “Sound Rivers’ role in identifying pollution sources is in order to get solutions. The listening session is our opportunity to share our data and answer questions, so the public feels like they’re in the know about their waterway.”

The presentation will be educational, including information about how to spot the signs of a sewage spill and septic system failure, the difference between a healthy and unhealthy waterway, and ways people can look out for the water.

“We’re going to cover some common misconceptions around things that people think are pollution, but they’re not, and giving people tips to be ‘creek keepers,’ helping us keep an eye on the signs and symptoms of creek health,” Sam said. “We’re trying to work together to look out for our creeks.”
