Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper Katey Zimmerman collects baseline data on Blounts Creek.

BLOUNTS CREEK UPDATE: While Martin Marietta Materials has no current plan to start mining limestone at its Vanceboro quarry, Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper Katey Zimmerman continues to collect baseline water-quality data on Blounts Creek. Armed with her YSI meter, Katey took Sound Rivers’ Bay Rider Riparianne on a cruise to the creek on Thursday. The meter measures physical and chemical parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen and turbidity, which will be key in determining how the future mine’s discharge of up to 12 million gallons of fresh water per day is impacting the Pamlico River tributary.
