AI data center community meeting, Kingsboro
Environmental, Tar-Pamlico Watershed
Posted on November 20th, 2025
Edgecombe County recently voted to update development ordinances to allow for AI data centers in the county, and is considering selling a chunk of Kingsboro Business Park between Rocky Mount and Tarboro to Energy Storage Solutions for a $19 billion, 900-megawatt project that would be one of the largest data centers in the Southeast. The county could sell the property as soon as their next meeting on Dec. 1.
The same company proposed a simultaneous smaller project in Tarboro in a different location. It was voted down by the town council in September, and the developer is now suing the town over process. That whole situation is separate from the Kingsboro site although it involves the same developer.
On Tuesday, Nov. 25. at 5:30 p.m., concerned community members will be gathering to discuss the proposed data center, deconstructing myths about the supposed economic value of AI data centers as well as raising important questions about energy bills, public health and environmental concerns and what next steps are as a community. Dr. Rania Masri of the NC Environmental Justice Network will be there to share more information about the trend of data centers popping up all over NC.
