A guided day of fishing on the Pamlico, another on the upper Neuse, a weeklong stay at the beach, whitewater kayaking on the Green River Gorge, tickets to the Carolina Hurricanes hockey game — adventure awaits bidders at Sound Rivers’ annual online auction.

“Every year, the items donated for the auction continue to amaze us, as do our supporters, who contribute them to the cause of keeping the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico rivers fishable, swimmable and drinkable,” said Sound Rivers Executive Director Heather Deck.

The two Megalodon shark teeth up for auction this year were found this summer off the coast of North Carolina by scuba divers, and Sound Rivers’ supporters, Bill and Sara Hanifin.

The environmental nonprofit, based in Washington, New Bern and Raleigh, monitors and protects the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico watersheds which cover nearly 25% of North Carolina’s land mass. The online auction coincides with Sound Rivers’ annual Oyster Roast, its biggest fundraiser of the year.

In keeping with the organization’s work, many of the items donated for the auction are waterways-related: handtied fishing flies, an inflatable stand-up paddleboard, tote bags handcrafted from recycled sails, Megalodon shark teeth found in coastal waters by Sound Rivers’ members and also scuba divers, and fine art reflecting life on the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico rivers.

“Some of our supporters are incredibly talented artists, and we are so excited to feature their original work in this year’s auction,” Deck said.

“Low Tide I” is one of two watercolor paintings by award-winning artist Lynne Anderson. They are featured as a set in this year’s Sound Rivers online auction.

The virtual auction goes live Saturday at 8 a.m. and concludes at 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 16, the night of the 37th-annual Oyster Roast in Washington. Traditionally held in person at the Oyster Roast, the auction went online in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic, and it’s stayed there since.

“Keeping the auction online really allows our supporters throughout both the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico watersheds to participate in our biggest fundraiser of the year — even if they can’t be here in person,” Deck said.

Auction items will be on display at the Oyster Roast, but all bidding will be online. Anyone interested can bid on auction items HERE!
