Sound Rivers Volunteer Coordinator Emily Fritz hangs out under the tent during a rainy Friday afternoon in Oriental.

Cyclists from across the state and beyond got an introduction to Sound Rivers at last weekend’s Cycle NC event in Oriental.

Longtime Sound Rivers members Bill Hines and Larry Summers hosted kayak tours for cyclists ready to get off their bikes and onto the water at the annual Cycle NC Spring Ride. The tours were free, but donations to Sound Rivers were accepted.

Sound Rivers Volunteer Coordinator Emily Fritz, an Oriental resident, was there to help out.

“There was rainy weather on Friday, so we had a really good day on Saturday. A lot of the people that came by hadn’t heard of Sound Rivers, so it was good to introduce them to our work,” Emily said, adding that one of the people she met at the Cycle NC kayak tours showed up this week to volunteer for Swim Guide sampling.

“It was a productive use of our time, for sure,” Emily said.

Plenty of cyclists took Bill Hines and Larry Summers up on their offer of kayak tours. In exchange, donations were accepted for Sound Rivers.

Plenty of information about Sound Rivers was available.

Emily and a young friend await the next round of kayakers.
