Claire Mixon, of Cape Lookout Power Squadron, and Neuse Riverkeeper Samantha Krop.

Monday was a busy day for Neuse Riverkeeper Samantha Krop.

In the morning, she was in the air surveilling concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) in the Neuse floodplain; in the evening, she was presenting a “state of the Neuse” report to a local Power Squadron.

Samantha joined members of the Cape Lookout Power Squadron at The Chelsea restaurant in downtown New Bern for their bi-monthly meeting.

“It was great to connect with our local community of boaters and to share information about common river issues that they can help alert us to with eyes on the water,” Samantha said.

She fielded a few questions from the audience, which led to a discussion on the best places to boat in the area (the “gut” where Bachelor Creek joins the Neuse River is one, according to Samantha), and asked about the ongoing pollution of Slocum Creek in Havelock and what Sound Rivers is doing to address the elevated bacteria levels there.
