Join us for a FREE screening of The Devil We Know on Tuesday December 11th at 7:00pm at The Historic Turnage Theatre. Unraveling one of the biggest environmental scandals of our time, this film shows how a group of citizens in West Virginia take on the powerful corporation DuPont, after they discover it has knowingly been dumping a toxic chemical – now found in the blood of 99.7% of Americans – into the drinking water supply.

The Devil We Know serves as a prequel to the Gen-X water crisis happening in North Carolina due to the chemical dumping by the DuPont spin-off corporation, Chemours. Join us for this free screening and discussion to learn how you can take action! Dr. Jamie Dewitt and Dr. David Collier from East Carolina University and your Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper will be present to answer questions, moderated by Executive Director Heather Deck.

About our Expert Panel

Dr. Jamie Dewitt

Jamie DeWitt is an environmental toxicologist in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University (ECU) in Greenville, North Carolina. She has Bachelor of Science degrees in environmental science and biology from Michigan State University and Ph.D. degrees in environmental science and neural science from Indiana University-Bloomington where she studied how aquatic pollutants affected brain development.  Since coming to ECU in 2008, she has continued to work with aquatic pollutants, notably those known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). These compounds are being discovered in water and other parts of the environment all over the world, including inside of people’s bodies. She works with many other scientists to understand how much of these compounds are in the environment, how they get into our bodies, and what they do once they’re in our bodies. She loves the field of toxicology because of its direct application to human health protection and necessity for public health policies.

Dr. David Collier

Dr. David Collier is a Professor of Pediatrics and Health Disparities at East Carolina University’s (ECU) Brody School of Medicine. He serves as Director of ECU’s Pediatric Healthy Weight Research and Treatment Center and is an Associate Director of the Integrative Health Sciences Facility Core for NCSU’s Center for Human Health and the Environment. Dr. Collier received a BS in Animal Science from NCSU, a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of North Carolina and completed medical school and residency training in pediatrics at ECU’s Brody School of Medicine. His clinical and research activities are focused on understanding the causes and consequences of childhood obesity with a particular interest in the role of environmental chemicals in the development and maintenance of obesity.
