Help Us Thank NC DEQ!

We are facing an incredibly challenging, uncertain time – but this is not the time to relax protections for your waterways, let polluters go unpunished, or allow threats to your rivers. While the Environmental Protection Agency has announced the suspension of enforcement of environmental regulations, your North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality has said they will continue holding polluters accountable and enforcing state protections for your waterways. You can read more in a memo from the NC DEQ here.

Federal rollbacks of rules designed to protect you are threatening not just the environment but your food, according to an article from Civil Eats. Relaxing enforcement, even temporarily, could have major consequences.

“While we understand the importance of evaluating non-compliance on a case by case basis during this crisis, it is alarming to see EPA suspend enforcement so broadly,” said your Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper, Jill Howell.

We hope you’ll join us in saying thank you, using the Action Alert here.

We are glad NC DEQ shares our belief that we cannot let this public health crisis turn into others.
