Families flocked to River Park North in Greenville on May 14th for Sound Rivers’ second annual Kids’ River Fest. The sun was shining on this late spring morning, while families filled the park. While some kids made a bee line for the kayaking station and the bounce house, others took a more leisurely approach and paused to get their faces painted while thinking of which activity to do next.
Kids River Fest was planned in partnership with River Park North with assistance from Day Dreamer Events and included things to keep kids both active and engaged. Over 1,200 people from nearly 20 towns traveled to Greenville for a morning of exploration near the Tar River.
Families filled the nature center for Pamlico Joe shows, reptile shows lead by park staff and an opportunity to view the stars with A Time For Science traveling planetarium. The Albemarle Pamlico National Estuary Program and the Museum of Natural Science educated kids about the water cycle and the importance of wetlands while volunteers and staff from Knee Deep Adventures lead kayaking on the pond. It truly was a great way excuse to spend a Saturday outside.
A similar Kids River Fest planned for Kinston on May 21st was rained out with a rescheduled event expected this fall.
